Web-based management of subject guides for academic libraries

Suzanne Gray, Digital Information Services Librarian at the University of Michigan Graduate Library, had an idea: build an application allowing creation, management and delivery of subject guides via the Web.
While a master's student at the University of Michigan School of Information, Kelsey Libner did a "Directed Field Experience" with Suzanne as the DFE mentor. Part of the plan for the DFE was to refine and then implement this idea for use by the Graduate Library. During the Winter term of 2002 they designed the application in close collaboration.
The PHP/MySQL-based application was coded by Kelsey Libner. The help of Eric Roland Goldberg was critical in getting started and solving some problems along the way. The ConnectionManager class (a piece of code) was adapted from Eric's University Reserves application. Eric also helped me design and debug the authentication system.
The University of Michigan Graduate Library paid me on an hourly basis to finish programming this application after the end of the academic term. I would like to recognize and applaud the Graduate Library for agreeing to make this application available under an open-source license after supporting its development.
